Simple, Complex, and Compound Sentence Definition

Introduction:

বাক্যের অর্থ, বর্ণনা বা কাজের উপর ভিত্তি করে Sentence-কে আবার পাঁচভাগে ভাগ করা হয়। কিন্তু বাক্যের গঠন প্রনালীর উপর ভিত্তি  করে বাক্যকে Simple complex and compound sentence-এ ভাগ করা যায়। 

What is a sentence? (বাক্য কাকে বলে?)

ব্যকরণগতভাবে দুই বা ততোধিক শব্দ (Word) একত্রে ব্যবহৃত হয়ে বক্তার মনের ভাব সম্পূর্ণ রূপে প্রকাশ করতে  পারে, এমন শব্দ সমষ্টিকে Sentence বা বাক্য বলা হয়।

একের অধিক শব্দ যদি ব্যকরণগতভাবে এক সাথে ব্যবহৃত না হয় অথবা যদি সম্পূর্ণ রূপে মনের প্রকাশ না করে, তাহলে সেটি বাক্য হবে না।

গঠন (structure) প্রকৃতির ‍দিক থেকে Sentence কত প্রকার ও কি কি?

বাক্যের গঠন (structure) প্রকৃতির ‍দিক থেকে sentence-কে প্রধানত: তিন ভাগে ভাগ করা হয়। (There are three main types of sentences according to their structures) তারা হলো:

1. Simple Sentence (সরল বাক্য)
2. Complex Sentence (জটিল বাক্য)
3. Compound Sentence (যৌগিক বাক্য)

1. – Simple sentence:

যে Sentence-এ একটি মাত্র Finite Verb থাকে, তাকে Simple Sentence বলে। A Simple sentence is one which has only one Finite verb.

Example:

• My teacher teaches me English. – আমার শিক্ষক আমাকে ইংরেজি শেখান।
• Going there, I found him. – সেখানে গিয়ে তাকে পেলাম।
• I want to write a letter. – আমি একটি চিঠি লিখতে চাই।
• Walking is good for health. – হাঁটা স্বাস্থ্যের জন্য ভালো।

উপরের প্রত্যেকটি বাক্যে মাত্র একটি করে Finite Verb রয়েছে।   প্রথম বাক্যে ‘teaches’ দ্বিতীয় বাক্যে ‘found’ তৃতীয় বাক্যে ‘want’ চতুর্থ বাক্যে ‘is’.   এই চারটি Sentence-এর প্রত্যেকটিতে একটি করে Finite Verb থাকায় সেগুলি একেকটি  Simple Sentence.

More Examples of Simple Sentences:

• He opened the door. – সে দরজা খুলে দিল।
• He reads a book. – সে একটি বই পড়ে।
• Rahim went to the store. – রহিম দোকানে গেল।
• They like coffee. – তারা কফি পছন্দ করে।
• Rahima did not go to the party. – রহিমা পার্টিতে যায়নি।

2. – Complex sentence:

যে Sentence-এ একটি মাত্র Principal Clause বা  Main Clause এবং এক বা একের অধিক Subordinate Clause থাকে, তাকে Complex sentence বলে।

A Complex sentence is one which has only one Principal Clause or Main Clause and one or more Subordinate Clauses.

Example:

• I know where he lives. – আমি জানি সে কোথায় থাকে।
• I will go if he comes. – সে এলে আমি যাব।
• I know the time when he will come. – আমি জানি সে কখন আসবে।
• You need not go since you are ill. –  তুমি অসুস্থ থাকায় তোমাকে যেতে হবে না।

কোন বাক্য Complex Sentence হবার জন্য তিনটি শর্ত:

1. Principal / main  Clause থাকবে।
2. Subordinating Conjunction (connective) থাকবে, তবে ক্ষেত্র বিশেষে Subordinating Conjunction উহ্য থাকতে পারে।
3. Subordinate Clause থাকবে।

Example:

• They know when I will come. [এই বাক্যে: They know= independent clause;  when= subordinating Conjunction;  when I will come = subordinate Clause]. 

• The boy who insulted you will be punished. [এই বাক্যে:

  The boy will be punished= Independent Clause; who= subordinating conjunction; who insulted you= subordinate clause].

Note: যে sentence-এ দুটি  clause একটি  subordinating conjunction দ্বারা যুক্ত থাকে, সেই sentence-টিই  complex sentence.

Subordinating conjunction:

Main Clause-এর সাথে Subordinate Clause-কে connect বা যুক্ত করার জন্য যে শব্দগুলি ব্যবহৃত হয়, তাদেরকেই Subordinating conjunction বলে। এই Subordinating conjunction দ্বারা Subordinate Clause-কে চেনা যায়, কারণ Subordinate Clause সবসময় Subordinating conjunction দ্বারা শুরু হয়। এই conjunction গুলো হচ্ছে:

• A – after, although, as, as if, as long as, as much as, as soon as, as though
• B – because, before, by the time
• D – despite
• E – even if, even though
• I – if, in order that, in case
• L – lest
• O – once, only if
• P – provided that
• S – since, so that
• T – than, that, though, till
• U – unless, until
• W – when, whenever, where, wherever, while

Note: Subordinate clause প্রথমে লিখলে কমা (,) ব্যবহার করতে হয়।

Example:

• When I  went there, I found him. – যখন আমি সেখানে গেলাম, আমি তাকে দেখলাম।
• Although he is poor, he is honest. – যদিও সে গরীব, সে সৎ।
• Though he is my friend, I can not help him now. – যদিও সে আমার বন্ধু, আমি এখন তাকে সাহায্য করতে পারি না।

3. – Compound Sentence:

যে Sentence-এ দুই বা তার অধিক Principal Clause থাকে, তাকে Compound Sentence বলে। A Compound Sentence is one which has two or more Principal Clauses.

Compound Sentence-এর clause গুলি সাধারণত: and, or, but, for, so, therefore, then, yet, ‍nor  প্রভৃতি coordinating conjunction দ্বারা যুক্ত থাকে।

Example:

• He is rich but his brother is poor. – সে ধনী কিন্তু তার ভাই গরীব।
• I went there and found him. – আমি সেখানে গেলাম এবং তাকে খুঁজে পেলাম।
• He is poor but he is honest. – সে গরীব কিন্তু সে সৎ।
• The army invaded the city, destroyed all the houses and killed many men. – সেনাবাহিনী শহর আক্রমণ করলো, সমস্ত বাড়িঘর ধ্বংস করলো এবং বহু পুরুষকে হত্যা করলো।
• Bring your book and open at page 20. – তোমার বইটি আন এবং কুড়ি নম্বর পৃষ্ঠা খোলো।

Note: যে Sentence-এ দুটি  Clause  Coordinating conjunction দ্বারা যুক্ত থাকে, সেই Sentence-টিই  Compound Sentence.

– Complex-Compound Sentence:

কোন কোন ক্ষেত্রে Compound Sentence- এ এক বা একাধিক Subordinate Clause থাকতে পারে। এ ধরনের বাক্যকে অনেকে Compound-Complex Sentence ‍বলে থাকে। আমরাও যদি এ ধরনের sentence-কে compound-complex sentence ‍বলতে পারি। কারন একটি sentence-এর মধ্যেেই Principal clause, Subordinate clause এবং Coordinate clause বিদ্যমান থাকে।

Example:

• The thief entered the room silently and he took away the watch which was in my box. – চোর নিশব্দে ঘরে প্রবেশ করলো এবং আমার বাক্সে থাকা ঘড়িটি নিয়ে গেল।
• He came to our house when I was asleep, and told my brother that he was going to the field. – সে আমাদের বাড়িতে এসেছিলো যখন আমি ঘুমিয়ে ছিলাম এবং সে আমার ভাইকে বলেছিলো যে সে মাঠে যাচ্ছে।

The final tips regarding Simple, Complex, and Compound and Complex-Compound sentences:

• Sentence-এ একটি মাত্র Finite Verb থাকলে sentence-টি Simple sentence.
• Sentence-এ subordinating clause-সহ দুইটি বা তার অধিক Finite Verb থাকলে sentence-টি Complex.
• Sentence-এ coordinate conjunction-সহ দুইটি বা তার অধিক Finite Verb থাকলে sentence-টি Compound sentence.
• Sentence-এ subordinating clause এবং coordinate clause থাকলে sentence-টি Compound-Complex sentence.
