‘It’ শব্দটি মূলত: একটি personal pronoun. Pronoun হিসাবে ব্যবহার ছাড়াও ইংরেজি বাক্য গঠনে এই ’it’-এর আরও অনেক ব্যবহার পরিলক্ষিত হয়। Use of ‘it’ lesson-এ translation-এর মাধ্যমে ‘it’-এর বিবিধ ব্যবহার সম্মন্ধে জানবো।

Rule:
ছোট শিশু, ইতর বা নিম্ন শ্রেনির প্রাণি ও জড় কোন কিছুর পরিবর্তে ‘it’ ব্যবহৃত হয়।
Example:
- এটি একটি দামী কলম – It is an expensive pen.
- এরুপ বলা অন্যায় – It is wrong to say so.
- এই যে তোমার বই; নিয়ে যাও – This is your book; take it away.
- শিশুটি তার মায়ের জন্য কাঁদছে – The baby is crying for its mother.
- আমি বাচ্চাটিকে দেখে তাকে একটি চকলেট দিলাম – I saw the baby and gave it a chocolate
- কুকুরকে ভালবাস সে তোমার প্রতি বিশ্বস্থ থাকবে – Love the dog, it will be faithful to you.
- ঘোড়াটি তার ক্ষিপ্রতার জন্য বিখ্যাত – The horse is famous for its agility.
Rule:
Sentence-এর প্রকৃত subject অনেক সময় উহ্য থাকে। এরুপ ক্ষেত্রে ‘it’-কে formal subject করে sentence আরম্ভ করতে হয়। এভাবে ব্যবহৃত ’it’-এর প্রকৃত কোন অর্থ থাকে না। একে Impersonal বা Preparatory ’it’ বলে। সাধারণত: আবহাওয়া, সময়, দুরত্ব প্রভৃতি বুঝাতে এই ’it’ ব্যবহৃত হয়।
Example:
- সন্ধ্যা হয়েছে – It is evening.
- এখন ন’টা বাজে – It is nine o’clock now.
- এখন পাঁচটা বাজতে পাঁচ মিনিট বাকী আছে – It is five minutes to five now.
- আমার ঘড়িতে পাঁচটা পাঁচ মিনিট হয়েছে – It is five minutes to five on my watch.
- গতকাল সারাদিন বৃষ্টি হচ্ছিলো – It was raining all day yesterday.
- আজ কি বার? – What day is it today?
- সত্য বলা খুব ভাল – It is very good to tell the truth.
- বৃষ্টি পড়ছে – It is raining.
- এরকম বলা খুবই সহজ – It is very easy to say.
- কাউকে গালি দেওয়া ভাল নয় – It is not good to abuse someone.
- এখন শোবার সময় হয়েছে – Now it is bedtime. or, It is time to go to bed.
- এখন তোমার বাড়ীতে যাওয়ার উপযুক্ত সময় – It is the perfect time to go home now.
- অনেক দিন আগে তোমার সাথে দেখা হয়েছিল – It is long time since I saw you last.
- এটি কলা জন্য মরসুম নয় – It is not the season for bananas.
- ঢাকা থেকে গাজীপুর তিরিশ কিলো – It is thirty kilo from Dhaka to Gazipur.-
- ষ্টেশনে যেতে আমার দশ মিনিট সময় লাগে – It takes me ten minutes to go to the station.
Rule:
Subject-এর জোড়ে দেয়ার জন্য অনেক সময় impersonal ‘it’ ব্যবহৃত হয়। ইহাকে emphatic ‘it’ বলে।
Example:
- এজন্য তুমিই দায়ী – It is you who are responsible for this.
- রহিমই আমাকে সাহায্য করেছিল – It is Rahim who helped me.
- তুমি কি ছেলেটিকে দেখেছিলে? – Is it you who saw the boy?
- তুমিই আমাকে গালিা দিয়েছিলে – It is you who insulted me.
- এজন্য ফারুকই দায়ী – It is Faruk who is responsible for this.
- তোমরাই ক্লাসে গোলমাল করেছিলে – It is you who made noise in class.
- তোমার ভাই-ই কি কলমটি হারিয়েছে? – Is it your brother who lost the pen?
More examples of using preparatory ‘it’.
- সমস্ত অর্থ ব্যয় করা লজ্জাজনক – It is a shame to spend all the money
- গতকাল না যাওয়াটা বোকামি ছিল – It was stupid not to go yesterday
- পরের সপ্তাহে তোমাকে দেখে দুর্দান্ত লাগবে – It will be wonderful to see you next week.
- আশ্চর্যের বিষয় যে সে তোমার সাথে কথা বলে নি – It is strange that he did not speak to you.
- এটা ভাবা ভুল যে সমস্ত লোক টাকার জন্য লোভী – It is wrong to think that all people greedy for money.
- কালকে বেড়াতে যেতে সুন্দর লাগবে – It will be lovely to go for a trip tomorrow.
- এক নাগারে তিন ঘন্টা বৃষ্টি হচ্ছে – It has been raining for three hours without stopping.
- এমনভাবে গাভীকে মারধর করা ঠিক নয় – It is not right to beat a cow like that.
- এটা সত্য যে তিনি ধনী মানুষ – It is a fact that he is a rich man.
- দুঃখের বিষয় যে তুমি আমার সাথে আসতে পারবে না – It is a pity that you cannot come with me.
- শহরে কোনও বাড়ি পাওয়া মুশকিল – It is difficult to find a house in the town.
- তিনি আমার বন্ধু তা বলা সত্য নয় – It is not true to say that he is my friend.
- আমার বাড়ি থেকে স্টেশন পর্যন্ত খুব বেশি দূরে নয় – It is not far from my house to the station.
- কেন সে ফিরে আসেনি তা বোঝা সহজ – It is easy to understand why he has not come back.
- বিছানায় যাওয়ার সময় হয়েছে – It is time to go to bed.
- এর জন্য কে দায়ী তা পরিষ্কার নয় – It is not clear who is responsible for this.
- তিনি কেন এই অভিযোগ অস্বীকার করেছেন তা অনিশ্চিত – It is uncertain why he denied the charge.
- দুঃখজনক যে তুমি কনসার্টটি মিস করেছো – It is a pity that you missed the concert.
